THE UNION BUILDINGS
When Jaco, my very talented friend and photographer, suggested we head to The Union Buildings to do the photo shoot for my outfit, I wasn’t immediately thrilled with the idea because the Union Buildings are renowned as a location for photo shoots of weddings, brides and grooms. You will almost always find a newly married couple, their families and photographers bumbling about, capturing their special day. The reason: well, the Union Buildings is the biggest tourist attraction in the Gauteng province, boasting its beautiful gardens and breathtaking views of the city of Tshwane.
Since it does house the office of the President, no one is allowed to enter the actual building but loitering around in the gardens is free and a privilege for South Africans and tourists alike.
I cannot remember the last time I visited The Union Buildings. Sadly, I missed the funeral of our beloved leader, Madiba, last year and the chance to pay my respects to Tata when his body was lying there in state.
I was convinced that this photo shoot would be a bit of a cliché but Jaco managed to twist my arm when he mentioned that the new Madiba statue had recently been unveiled at the Union Buildings. I was taken aback by the sight of the statue. Jaco used it as the backdrop in the photo shoot during sunset which made the photos look pretty awesome. I forget sometimes that apart from being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, South Africa and particularly the Highveld are blessed with the spectacular sunsets.
For the photo shoot, I chose to wear a colourful midi skirt because of its Aztec prints which sort of follow Madiba’s trendsetting look. Not only was Madiba a freedom fighter and the first democratically elected Black president of our country, he was also a fashion icon of sorts whose eclactic “Madiba” shirts became world famous and definitive of African freedom.
I accessorised my ‘Madiba’ look with a sexy pair of Dior pumps accompanied by my very trendy Burberry bag. I hope I did Madiba proud.
